Are IITs sufficiently open to new Ideas

Hi everyone

All of us have seen a lot of world outside the campuses of IITs in the past few months .We have had some enlightening revelations about our selves in the same period. One thing that keeps resurfacing in my mind is that whether IITs are open and flexible enough for appreciating and encouraging new ideas and innovations.

We do hear a lot of news about extraordinary guys and girls making it to these premier institutes every passing day.People who are great innovators ,prodigies ,Olympiad wiz kids etc but we do not hear much about them after they come here.Is it that their innovative spirit dies out once they are here?Or they do not make it public due to some issues like unhealthy competition, risk of plagiarism or lack of support from the faculty?sometimes it feels like we become moronic ,nonchalant and snoozy as soon as we become a part of this "System".

I believe the very foundations of the IIT system is to be open to all sorts of weird ideas and to objectively evaluate each one till we find some solid grounds why a certain thing is not feasible.Rather the scenario is that not only do we totally ignore logical evaluation of new ideas we also neglect the prospects of existing techniques.

As you would have observed from your experiences ,the higher education system elsewhere gives a lot of importance to innovation rather than only perfection in existing technologies. In my opinion as well this is the way to go.

Please submit your views about this situation -your personal thoughts, suggestions to improve the situation and cite some examples if know of any where you find an exception.

A lot has been said and written about IIT system, a lot of debates gone waste. Been in IIT for two years now, I can speak about the loopholes in the 'system' too, Like the weird course system which makes you learn a bit of everything about your field(very different from US universities).

But then consider why IIT was established in the first place- to create a pool of technocrats and not scientists and research-guys. IITs have quite succeeded in doing that. So, blaming on IIT system for not creating another C.V.Raman is like blaming IITs for not creating another Tagore because IITs were not supposed to do so anyways.

By the way, I am open to debate and you can disagree. Remember, it's just my take on it.
